PROJECTS

Lighting Design Project-DD: Space Fit-Out
Boston Architectural College - Interior Design Program
TSM 2015 - Lighting Design

It is time to start putting together design development documents. Keep your lighting design objectives and visual goals in mind as you lay out the lights to ensure you do not deviate from your original goals (this will be considered during grading). Below you will find a list of deliverables. These deliverables will need to be compiled onto one or two presentation boards that will be emailed to us prior to the final class.

Design Development Deliverables:

There should be a clear title block.
The title “Design Development_Space Fit-Out” needs to be included on your title block.
Your individual concept title needs to be included on your title block.
Your name and date needs to be included on your title block.

Points will be deducted if your title block does not follow the criteria noted above.

On a 24”x36” board provide:

  1. Provide a preliminary lighting layout based on the general rules of thumb for each of the different lighting strategies you are proposing.
  2. Provide at least 1 integrated lighting solution for the space. This means the light fixture is concealed from view by an architectural detail (cove, wall slot, millwork, etc.) Either hand or CAD drawn to scale. Remember to show dimensions, material call outs, paint finishes, notes, and the intended fixtures being used drawn to scale.
  3. Provide at least 3 lighting sketches (section diagrams showing light distribution and sight lines, mounting details, etc.). Either hand or CAD drawn to scale. 3 is minimum, provide all as required to get your design intent across.
  4. Provide switching zone diagrams of your lighting layouts.
  5. Provide a complete fixture schedule with product description, manufacturer’s model numbers, lamping, wattage, and any required notes that pertain to your design. (Based on the example shared on the class website).
  6. Perform a lighting power density analysis of your design to ensure it passes required energy codes. (Based on the example shared on the class website).

In an 8.5x11 compiled package:
  1. Compile all cutsheets needed to implement your lighting design with fixture type noted on the top right of each sheet. These do not need to be placed on your board. 8.5”x11” double sided prints are fine.

Your board will be presented in class as your final. They can be either hard copy and pinned up or digital and projected onto the whiteboard. Please note: if you are doing your board by hand, you will need to have drafting type handwriting and graphic design quality type of layout.

Lighting Design Project-SD: Space Fit-Out
Boston Architectural College - Interior Design Program
TSM 2015 - Lighting Design

Now that you have drafted a design concept and selected a client, you can begin to work through the schematic design phase. Think about the first half of the semester and the discussions we have had in regards to the flynn modes, hierarchy, and layers of light when developing your lighting designs. For this round, don’t worry about fixture types. It’s more about where you want the light and the surfaces you would like to light, so have fun! Below you will find a list of deliverables you will need to compile onto one or two presentation boards that will be emailed to us prior to the next class.

Schematic Design Deliverables:

There should be a clear title block.
The title “Schematic Design_Space Fit-Out” needs to be included on your title block.
Your individual concept title needs to be included on your title block.
Your name and date needs to be included on your title block.

Points will be deducted if your title block does not follow the criteria noted above.

On a 24”x36” board provide:

  1. List your visual goals (at least 2)
    1. What do you want your space to visually express? (Rhythm, randomness, flow, etc.)
    2. How do you anticipate accomplishing these goals?
  2. List your lighting design goals (at least 5)
    1. How do you want your space to feel? (Visually clear, spacious, private, relaxed, etc.)
    2. How do you anticipate accomplishing these goals? (Task lighting, indirect lighting, accent lighting, ambient/general lighting, etc.)
  3. Provide at least 1 integrated lighting solution for the space. This means that the light fixture is concealed from view by an architectural detail (cove, wall slot, millwork, etc…).
  4. Provide a preliminary lighting plot diagram showing how you want the layers of light to work to portray hierarchy in the space. Ultimately, map the layers of light in the space.
  5. Provide at least 3 lighting sketches showing light distribution and how you would like the space to look for the occupant experiencing the space (sections, details, elevations etc.).
  6. Show concept images for any decorative fixtures.

Lighting Design Project-Concept: Space Fit-Out
Boston Architectural College - Interior Design Program
TSM 2015 - Lighting Design

A local company is looking to update their space to be more state-of-the-art. They have asked you to craft an innovative lighting design for the interior and exterior roof deck of their space that focus on strategies that promote quality lighting techniques, as well as showcasing their creative spirit and originality.

The client can be anyone. Be creative. This client will need to be used throughout the entire project the rest of the semester, so choose wisely.

Based on the things you have learned in this class and personal experiences, identify the lighting design goals that are important for this type of client -
What are the various functions that may need to be performed in the space? (Reading, writing, walking, etc.?)
What are the visual needs required to perform these functions throughout the day in the space? (General lighting, task lighting, etc.?)
What are the important features of the space?

Plans, elevations, and a 3D model will be distributed at a later date.

Craft a connection between your lighting design goals and your design concept.

Concept Design Deliverables:

There should be a clear title block.
The title “Concept Design_Space Fit-Out” needs to be included on your title block.
Your individual concept title needs to be included on your title block.
Your name and date needs to be included on your title block.

Points will be deducted if your title block does not follow the criteria noted above.

On the 24”x36” board provide:

  1. An introduction to your client (max 30 words). Sticking to your client throughout all phases  is key (to a solid grade).
  2. A brief written description of your design concept and goals (100 to 300 words). Sticking to your design concept throughout all phases is key (to a solid grade).
  3. List 3 types of functions that your design concept addresses.
  4. List 3 occupant visual needs that your design concept addresses.
  5. Define 2 architectural lighting features that your design concept incorporates.
  6. Precedent images (at least 6) that portray your lighting design concept. Remember, these need to be high quality photos as they will be presented to the Owner.

Your board will be presented in class. They can be either hard copy and pinned up or digital and projected onto the whiteboard. Please note: if you are doing your board by hand, you will need to have drafting type handwriting and graphic design quality type of layout.

Design Project 1: Custom Fixture Design
Boston Architectural College - Interior Design Program
TSM 2015 – Lighting Design

You have been commissioned to develop and build a new custom light fixture for a client.  The only direction given to you is that it evokes the theme of CELEBRATION, in some manner. The fixture needs to use electricity and light up! There is no specific budget for this project to limit you - so be imaginative! Look for clever, interesting, and effective solutions.

The documentation package must describe your design solutions with graphics and text, in a clear, organized manner. Your documents should be sufficiently detailed to be given to a custom fixture fabricator, so that they could provide accurate pricing and ultimately build your design.

This will be your mid-term design project and will be presented during class #8 - March 13th, 2019.

  1. Show precedent images for your lighting fixture design concept.

  1. Concept statement to be handed in at class #2 - January 30th, 2019: Provide a brief written statement (300 word max) of your custom fixture design concept, in order to define your lighting fixture goals. Be thoughtful and complete in your description - think about how the fixture emits light, and affects the space it is designed for.

Your fixture design ideas should relate directly to your design concept. Your concept design goals established in your concept statement must be carried through final design of your built fixture. You will be graded on this.

  1. Identify the materials you will be using in your lighting fixture. Think of your package as a set of shop drawings, to include all necessary size and dimensions, mounting requirements, material information, finishes, lamping, and lighting effects.

  1. Document your design with complete rendered plans, sections, and elevations with all solutions clearly shown. Remember titles of drawings and scale notations.

  • Build a full scale working prototype of your fixture design.
    • Other than a socket and a lamp and wiring, NO off the shelf lighting products may be used in constructing your custom fixture. For example, no table lamps etc…
    • Re purposing non-lighting materials will be acceptable.

Remember -
    • You need to be able to bring it to class on presentation day - so, if it is a very large design, build an accurately scaled down version.
    • The fixture needs to illuminate, needs to match the drawings you are presenting, and needs to not catch fire/smoke or melt during the presentation.
    • The fixture you are designing will be plugged in and operating for a duration of 3 hours, while you and the rest of your classmates present your design ideas - failure to do so will, unfortunately, result in a non-passing grade.

  • Presentation Deliverables -
    • Include one plan and one section drawing -  more if needed to clearly understand the light fixture design.
    • Illustrate the intended light distribution with colored section diagrams.
    • Provide sufficient descriptive notes to describe all aspects of your design in graphic form.
    • Clearly identify how the fixture is intended to be re-lamped and maintained.
    • Include one detail drawing and one perspective sketch to fully describe your custom fixture - add more if needed.
    • Provide any additional information that may be required to clearly understand your design intent and the lighting fixture itself.
  • Include a description of your design objectives -
    • What is its lighting purpose? - is it a task light, ambient source, accent light...etc...
    • What type of fixture is it? - Is it a pendant, wall sconce, table lamp… etc…
    • What type of space is it designed for? - office, living room, bedroom, restaurant, commercial space… etc...

All materials to be presented on (1) 24”x36” sheet as outlined above and presented in class as your midterm presentation. PDFs (or .jpeg high quality photo of your board) due by 7:15pm day of presentation for full credit. Submissions time stamped after 7:15pm on presentation day will be docked 15% per class policy. Submissions received after Sunday post-presentation day will receive zero credit.
