Shadows _Gloria

LATE NIGHT STROLL
Walking through the street while thinking about the h/wk I got to noticed something I have always done but never paid attention too. Walking though the streets alone while listening to music I am not alert to my surroundings but the light around me helps provide shadows that give me a scene of my surroundings. For example, I can tell someone is coming behind me without hearing them just by the cast of their shadow coming closer to me.
INVISIBLE BOUNDARIES
Shadows also act like boundaries in some cases like above where the hallway has multipurpose use. The shadow is being cast in the space that is being used for circulation which helps highlight the other task spaces like the sitting and the work displays.

Nyctophobia: Fear of the Dark

or

Me and My Shadow(s)?

Assembly Square

Missing My Shadow

As I write this I look out the window upon a grey sky.  But not an ordinary grey sky.  The sky is a perfectly flat grey with no variation at all.  Like a photographer’s medium grey backdrop.  The light is so even and low that there are almost no shadows at all.

My shadow, which is always with me, is gone.  Disappeared into the grey.  Shadows show us the three dimensionality of the world.  But not today.  Today the world looks flat and grey and lifeless.

Fear of The Dark

     What is the dark?
     It is a shadow.
     The shadow of the world.

Like many children, I was afraid of the dark.
As an adult, I completely lost my fear of the dark.

Now it’s just an inconvenience.
To not be able to see where I'm going.

Oops, the lights just went out.
Now where is that damn flashlight.
Ouch, I just stubbed my toe on the way to find it.

OK, not afraid of the dark.
But perhaps a healthy respect for it.

Shadows in Revit Model_Studio 4

6 am: Shadows cast from the East in the morning, long shadows with a gold/warm tint.

8 am: Long shadows come in from Southeast, plants main light source is in the early morning hours.

9 am: Shadows grow shorter as day goes on, already in need of lamps in interior of space.
In this study, I am gathering information for Studio 4 project, I am studying how much natural light the plants and live wall will receive throughout the day and how I will integrate lamps into my design.

Keelin Salisbury - Journal #3 - "Poor Lighting"

These photos were taken in the George Sherman Union Building at Boston University, for a corporate event I was planning. Although most of my reasoning is likely owed to my personal preference, I think this space exemplifies "poor lighting." Considering how huge the event space is, it actually feels relatively confined to me. With a serious lack of daylighting, or much lighting variety, it also feels pretty hazy. However, it's haziness doesn't lead to feelings of tranquility.

Attributes: confined (relatively), (mostly) hazy, dislike
Modes: dim, uniform in larger room, non-uniform in smaller side room, cool

Ana Vieira_Journal #3 - Perception in Lighting_Part II

For this week’s journal I decided to use BAC’s Loft space to exemplify poor lighting. This is essentially a space in the school where the students eat, relax, use as a meeting point and, above all, work on their assignments. However, I consider it to be very poorly lit, especially at night, when you don’t have natural light coming in. The ambient light is insufficient to create visual clarity and it makes the space look a bit cramped. The task light that comes from the ceiling track system creates glare and is also badly positioned, which also contributes to a non-uniform and uncomfortable light in that space.

Journal Assignment #3: Perception in Lighting Part 2 - Sheila Clarke

Photo #1 is a very poorly lit living room.  The ambient lighting is casting shadows which is causing the room to be hazy and cold.  The task lighting is too bright, it makes you feel like you are under a spotlight

Photo #2 is a poorly lit restaurant.  You would think the decorative lighting would add ambiance and a sense of privacy, but it didn't.  There was a definite lack of ambient lighting, which made the experience uncomfortable because you couldn't read your menu or barely see who you were dining with.

Home Living room

This part of my home has very poor lighting for nights. Actually, it only has task lights, one to read in the coach and one for the desk. There are no ambient lights and we are always struggling with that. It is not a comfortable lighting space. You don't have visual clarity and the light is very non-uniform.

Image result for room with bad lighting example

Here is an example of bad lighting based on the Flynn Attributes. The lighting in this kitchen is very hazy which is not suitable for cooking. The use of overhead lights as ambient lighting fail in that the area becomes unpleasant and confined. The lighting is central to the space and casts dim light in the room creating a lot of darkness and shadows. If task lighting were to be placed around the perimeter under the cabinets, the lighting quality would increase in that the functionality of the space would be better to prepare meals/cook. The lighting in this space could be considered somewhat warm and relaxing if you were just having dinner, however on the other hand if you were actually trying to cook it would probably, for most, create a strong negative reaction because it would be difficult to see what you are doing!

Jenni Jacobs - Journal #3 Perception in Lighting Part II

I was in Trident Booksellers this week and was not particularly pleased with the lighting.  I found the overheard fluorescent lighting to be too glaring and sterile-feeling based on the color temperature.

In terms of the Flynn Attributes:
  • Strong visual clarity
  • Created a somewhat spacious feel even though books and merchandise are crammed everywhere
  • I disliked the lighting arrangement overall as it was too overhead in the main book areas without any dynamic layers of lighting
  • Created a feeling more so of alertness than relaxation
  • Public space
In terms of the Flynn Modes:
  • Too bright in my opinion - in one area track lighting illuminating bookshelves creates glare if you're standing in front of the shelves
  • Pretty uniform arrangement
  • Central and overhead
  • Too cool color temperature - I wish it felt warmer
