Ignacia de Iruarrizaga - Journal #2: Perception of Lighting I

Harvard Business School Auditorium - Klarman Hall

This past weekend I attend the Annual Design Conference at HBS. It was a whole day conference dictated at Klarman Hall. The hall is an excellent auditorium. Well designed, comfortable both for the audience and for the speakers. It has a good visual situation with a judge screen that contributes to this. Perfect acoustic and lightning. They use very modern and versatile technology to adapt the place for different needs, considering, acoustic, visual and lighting.

The light of the place was appropriate and pleasant all day long. Never too bright and never too dark. As an audience, you can see the speaker perfectly, take notes and at the same time watch the screen. The place has a lot of visual clarity, spaciousness, and privacy even though it was not private at all.

- There were lots of task lights pointing the stage, not all of them in use
- Lots of ambient lights, ones very soft others very tall in the ceiling. Not all of them in use
- Some focal light highlighting the surfaces of the walls and guiding the path
- The daylight was controlled by translucent shutters. On the top they let the light pass a little bit, on the sides completely closed.
