Keelin Salisbury - Journal #1

Tatte Bakery & Cafe, Summer Street (Photo 1-3):

The new Tatte location downtown uses a few layers of lighting, made up of several different fixtures to keep it bright and vibrant inside. A few recessed lights on the ceiling, along with the simple (all white) pendants seem to make up the general/ambient layer of lighting. The other, more interesting, pendants definitely add to the ambient layer, but primarily serve as a task layer, lighting up the counter, check-out area, and tables. I would consider the larger pendants over the counter to also stand out as a decorative layer. Lastly, the sconces along the walls add accent lighting to the mix, creating a warm glow on the tile walls.

Taste Wine Bar, Summer Street:

This modern wine bar features statement decorative fixtures over the bar, which are so bright that they could arguably add to the ambient/general layer as well. There is additional task lighting over the back portion of the bar, and also from the pendants over the communal table along the right. Although they are not illuminated in this photo, the small track lighting along the ceiling would also have added to the general/ambient layer of lighting. Without the notable decorative layer over the bar, the wine bar would definitely feel much less lively.

Office Lobby, 99 Summer Street:

The lighting in this downtown office lobby definitely sets a mood and creates an interesting visual experience. Although interesting and decorative, the central pendants seem to create the ambient layer of lighting. There are also several examples of accent lighting, such as the recessed lights pointing up the walls on both sides, where the walls meet the ceiling in the back area, and also illuminating the stairwell on the left. This layer of lighting is clearly brighter than the ambient layer, creating more of a focal point. Lastly, there are some pendants creating a task layer of lighting over the coffee bar. I can imagine this space would appear much more boring without the interesting accent layers.
