Layers of Light - Ellen Pierce

Layers of Light - Ellen Pierce

The Library - Yvonne’s
Yvonne’s restaurant has a few different rooms with beautiful architectural features and lighting to highlight the space. The lighting in the library in particular creates a cozy, intimate feel with visual interest on the walls, coffered ceiling and mahogany flooring. The lighting coming from the ceiling is the ambient or general lighting so that patrons can move about and access seating in the restaurant. Task lighting is placed on the walls to emphasize that it is a ‘library’ also displaying different artwork portraits. Lastly the sconces over on the right hand side attempt to highlight the fireplace surround/mantle but get slightly consumed by the other architectural details that overtake the room.

The lighting plan in this space allows hotel guests to physically and visually transition through the space. Again, lighting here is used to emphasize architectural features and design work. The most visible is the directional (which is also gives off ambient) lighting showing the different floors of the hotel at the same time creating drama accentuating the size of the space/high ceilings. It also appears that some accent lighting is focused on the windows to highlight design/detail. The chandeliers are some of the decorative (and general) lighting in the space. Other task lighting is at the bar area making a point of the beverage selection available to guests.

There are many layers of light in this photo. Solea restaurant wants to show off its old world Spanish style also advertising a fun, vibrant and colorful space. The chandeliers serve as both ambient and decorative lighting in the space. More decorative lighting can be found on the walls through the use of sconces. Recessed lighting act as ambient lighting as well as task lighting for reading the menu & eating dinner. In addition, they also serve as accent lights showcasing artwork hung & the venetian plaster on the walls.

Full disclosure: Although I have been to these places before, I did not have time to go there during the past week! Just wanted to add some pretty pictures and visual interest in terms of layers of lighting for our assignment. :-)
