Carey Schmidt - Journal #2: Perception in Lighting Part 1

Photo's #1+2+3: Shovel Handel Pub at Whitney's Inn, Jackson NH
Being a wedding venue and an après ski pub, I think this room is perfectly lit during the day and night. It has very large windows (shown in picture #1+2), which allow all of the daylight to fill the room for their daytime weddings and lunchtime crowds. This type of light gives the room a lot of brightness, high visual clarity, and spaciousness, which gave me a happy and upbeat feeling. Picture #3 shows what the pub looks like at night. The white christmas lights are strung around almost every pole in the pub, which lit up the room with a very warm and cozy, yet still pleasurable feeling. When the day turned into night, the room felt dimmer, but still had uniformity and visual clarity with the continuous flow of the christmas lights. It then felt more tranquil, quiet, relaxing, and confined, which gave the room more of a private feeling for a better nighttime ambience.

Photo #4: Vans, Newbury St.
Here is an example of great visual clarity, brightness, spaciousness, and uniformity shown in a different way than pictures #1+2. The brightness in this room comes from the cool, white lights, which I enjoy as well, because I like to see the true colors and details of the clothing and accessories when I'm shopping.
